Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Dog Decoration, Stamped "EDMANDS & CO.," Charlestown, MA, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large dog resembling a greyhound, standing atop a stylized ground with pointed shrubs. Heavily-striped detail to body and neck. This jug is the first dog-decorated example of Edmands stoneware that we have seen. The style and overall artistic quality of the decoration rivals that commonly found on Edmands stoneware. The close similarity of this design to a second dog decoration seen on a three-gallon jar, stamped "WHITE'S UTICA," (lot 53 in Crocker Farm's May 21, 2005 auction) indicates it was likely executed by an itinerant decorator who was previously employed in New York State. Significant professional restoration to underside, base area, and left side of jug. A 3 5/8" hairline from spout on reverse. A 1 3/4" horizontal surface line to shoulder of jug above lower handle terminal.
