Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Two-Sided Stenciling, Stenciled "RICHEY & HAMILTON. / PALATINE. / W.VA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with stenciled scrollwork and small stenciled tulips surrounding the maker's mark, "RICHEY & HAMILTON / PALATINE. / W.VA." Freehand cobalt stripe below rim and stenciled "6"with flourishes at base. Reverse decorated with elaborate stenciled floral motifs flanking two stenciled "6's". Freehand stripe and stenciled scrollwork above. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a fifty-year collection. This jar's two-sided cobalt application is a rare treatment in regional stenciled stoneware. A tight Y-shaped crack across underside. Some fry to cobalt. Two in-the-firing base chips. Some staining to surface. H 16 1/2".
