Fine Two-Gallon Pittsburgh, PA Stoneware Advertising Jar with Profuse Cobalt Decoration, Pittsburgh, PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled midsection and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "Samuel Cooper / Manufacturers Agent / No. 7 / Pittsburgh." Shoulder with script "2"surrounded by spots and flanked by graduated foliate motifs. Freehand wavy stripe decoration throughout. Incised "X" on top of rim. A nice example of combined stenciled and freehand cobalt elements, extending from top to bottom. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a faint drip of slip to shoulder, a tiny in-the-firing ping to reverse, and some extremely minor surface wear.
