Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKer," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and large, arching tab handles; surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze and decorated with iron-slip drape motifs on the front and reverse and looping line motifs under each handle. Front with script iron-slip "C" for "Chandler." Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in New York State. Excellent condition with a faint 3 1/2" line from rim on front, a minor in-the-firing fissure to one handle, and a small in-the-firing base chip. H 16 1/2".
