Extremely Rare Pair of Cobalt-Decorated Chemical Stoneware Coolers, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, both of ovoid form with curved tab handles and tall spout flanked by applied cylindrical openings, each decorated with cobalt highlights. Two of a small number of Mid-Atlantic chemical stoneware pieces known, among the earliest examples of this form found in American ceramic production. An outstanding sculptural form, each measuring approximately four gallons. Chips to both. One with large in-the-firing iron ping to side. The other with additional loss to one handle. H (of each) 17".
