Two Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jars, William H. Lehew, Strasburg, VA, circa 1865-1875, both of cylindrical form; one with swag decoration, impressed with a half-gallon capacity mark and Lehew's earliest and rarest maker's mark, "W.H. Lehew & CO / Strasburg. VA," with reversed S's; the other decorated with upswept swag motifs, impressed with the later stamp, "W.H. LEHEW & CO / STRASBURG VA. Taller jar with rim chips, a 3 1/2" hairline from rim, a 1 1/8" in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder, a base chip with small fork-shaped surface line extending from it, and a minor base nick. Other jar with rim chips, a long, curving crack from rim extending across underside, minor rim chips, and some residue around base area. H (of taller jar) 8 7/8".
