Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E S FOX / ATHENS," NY State origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a brushed design of a bird on stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and lower handle terminal. In-the-firing salt globs to reverse and side of jug. A 1 1/2" hairline from spout on reverse. A 3 1/2" hairline on front, connecting to a spider line on underside. A few in-the-firing contact marks to surface, including a small in-the-firing chip to side of handle.
