Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "JORDAN," NY State origin, circa 1835, highly-ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird beside a large spotted flower. The reverse shoulder of the jug includes a large incised "V." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Marked Jordan stoneware of any kind is considered unusual and incised examples are exceptionally rare. Among the small number of signed Jordan pieces that we have offered, this jug is the first featuring an incised decoration. A reglued 4 1/2" section at base on reverse, including a 1/2" chip and a 4 1/2" hairline extending from it. A shallow chip to top of rim.
