Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "G.G. WILLIAMS & CO. / LYONS. N.Y**," circa 1835, ovoid jar with tall collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a drooping flower extending from a leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Potter's fingerprints are visible in the Albany slip on the interior of the jar's rim. George Williams was trained at the Nathan Clark Pottery in Athens, NY, and in 1822 was sent by Clark to establish a pottery in Lyons. Few pieces have survived bearing his mark. A recessed area on one side of jar. A shallow 1 3/4" x 1" rim chip on reverse. Rim wear and a minor chip to interior of rim. Some staining and light wear to surface. A horizontal hairline to base. A 1 3/4" inverted Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior.
