Rare Eight-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Keg, Dated 1861, probably Beaver, PA origin, 1861, semi-ovoid form with circular bunghole at base and circular opening on top, decorated with the brushed cobalt date and inscription, "1861 / 8 g," applied over a slip coating. The inscription "8 g" refers to eight gallons. Additional haphazardly-applied cobalt on top of cooler. Exceptional size and form. Essentially as-made condition. As evidenced by a brown, salt-glazed area surrounding the bunghole, this cooler likely had a small, applied circular mouth to its bunghole, which was lost early in the firing. H 19".
