Exceptional Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Lid, Stamped "WB," Washington Becham, Crawford County, GA, second half 19th century, narrow, semi-ovoid form with flared rim and applied strap handles, the surface decorated in a mottled green alkaline glaze. Impressed "WB" on one handle. Includes original alkaline-glazed lid with recessed top and oversized knob. Exceptional form with rare inclusion of its original lid. Among the finest Becham family pieces that we have ever offered. A shallow chipped area to one side of rim. A minor, glazed-over chip to opposite side of rim. A chip to interior of rim. A tight, 4 3/4" circular line on underside with three lines that extend off from it and continue a few inches up base of churn. This flaw is mostly in the surface and only partially visible on the interior. Chips to outer edge of lid. H (excluding lid) 15 1/2".
