Exceedingly Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Cheese Strainer, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1885, two conjoined butter crock forms with pierced holes in the side for straining two wheels of cheese. Each half includes a wheel-thrown lid, decorated with Remmey-style swags, that was cut prior to firing to fit together on this highly unusual, double-lobed form. This work is the first cobalt-decorated cheese strainer that we have offered. Requiring four separately-thrown balls of clay to complete, this complex creation was most likely a specially-ordered piece. Much of one knob professionally-restored. An in-the-firing flake to edge of same knob. Three chips to edge of other lid, one chip to flange on underside of same lid, and four small chips to knob of same lid. A large area of restoration to right side of strainer. A 1 1/2" rim chip and a few other minor rim nicks. Two small chips to interior of rim. H (including lid) 6 1/4" ; L 13".
