Extremely Rare Sixteen-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Palatine, WV origin, circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed flowering vine below an unusual looping line motif, flanked by swags. Freehand cobalt stripe below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "16" at shoulder, a highly unusual treatment for Palatine stoneware as vessel capacities were typically brushed in cobalt slip. This jar is the largest known piece produced in the Palatine stoneware tradition. Large X-shaped firing crack to surface of underside, not visible on interior. This surface crack continues approximately 1 1/4" onto base of jar. Surface wear to jar. Several chips to left handle. Right handle with a 1 1/4" glazed-over chip, a worn area, and a small chip. H 21 1/2".
