Exceedingly Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "KNOX & BRO / POTTERS / Shinnston / W Va," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled midsection, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with an undulating vine above a cobalt-script "3," flanked by stripes. Cobalt stripe below rim and highlighting the handle terminals. Reverse impressed with the extremely rare maker's mark, "KNOX & BRO. / POTTERS / Shinnston / W Va." The Knox family is most well-known for its later stenciled ware. This crock is the first example of their work bearing an impressed maker's mark that we have ever offered. A professionally-restored crack from rim on reverse, extending partway onto underside. Some light surface wear. A small chip to interior of rim.
