Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Vine Decoration and Molded Handles, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and molded handles featuring relief geometric and stylized floral designs. Front of crock decorated with a large looping vine design extending from handle to handle. Freehand "5" below, flanked by floral devices. Unusual form with distinctive Thompson handles and brushwork. A long, horizontal surface crack to base, extending from edge of reverse onto front. This crack includes a 4 1/2" hairline that extends through it on the crock's front. A 4 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Rim chips. A 2" flake to underside of right handle. A 3/8" ping to shoulder area on front.
