Very Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "J,N," Stamped "JULIUS NORTON / BENNINGTON, Vt.," circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with the large script signature, "J,N,. for Julius Norton. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of a few examples of Julius Norton stoneware known bearing the famed potter's initialed signature. Provenance: Recently-surfaced in Western Pennsylvania. Some exfoliation to sides and reverse. Minor spout chips. Base chips.
