Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, probably CT origin, circa 1815, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a long-necked bird with crest, perched on a fanned floral motif. Interior of design includes elaborate incised details. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Left handle professionally restored. Band of exfoliation, painted red, at midsection on reverse, which extends a short distance onto left and right sides of jar. A few base chips. Some in-the-firing crazing to left and right sides of jar at base. Some additional small, in-the-firing flaws to surface. Rim chips and a small chip to inner rim for lid.
