Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, probably Capt. James Morgan, Cheesequake, NJ, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with three conjoined, slip-trailed watch springs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 7/8" in-the-firing surface chip to midsection on one side. One handle with a network of tight cracks and a surface chip. An inverted Y-shaped crack from rim, descending under one handle. A vertical line on side of jar. Crazing to much of surface.
