Half-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Compass Decoration, attributed to Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted drape design executed with a compass. A fine example attributed to the prolific African-American stoneware potter of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Rim and base chips. One handle flattened along edge during the firing. An in-the-firing iron ping near base. H 7 3/4".
