Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, probably Crolius Family, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, footed base, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate motif in the Manhattan style. Heavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Appealing form, decoration, and color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A large network of very tight cracks to one side, one of which continues onto underside. A 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark under one handle. A shallow 1" in-the-firing base chip. Two smaller base chips. Two small rim chips.
