Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Decoration, Stamped "W.H. LEHEW & Co / STRASBURG. VA," circa 1870, large-sized, cylindrical jar with lug handles, decorated with a large horizontal floral motif on the front and reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed under one handle with an earlier W.H. Lehew maker's mark featuring backwards S's, below a six-gallon capacity mark. A tight spider crack on underside, part of which continues diagonally several inches up base of jar. This damage is partially covered by restoration material at the jar's bottom edge. A long, in-the-firing vertical scratch to one side, which is glazed over. A chip to one handle. A thin 6" crack from rim. A 1/2" in-the-making chip to top edge of rim. A salt drip to base. H 15 5/8".
