Unusual Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "S. BELL & SON. / STRASBURG," VA origin, circa 1890, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a series of C-scroll swags and flowers, applied over whitish slip. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed on shoulder with "S. BELL & SON." maker's mark beside a four-gallon capacity mark. Restoration to base. X-shaped crack in underside. A 7" partially-restored crack from rim on reverse. A 3 3/4" partially-restored crack from rim on reverse. A 3" partially-restored crack from rim above one handle. A few base chips. Two rim chips. Some wear to slip along one handle.
