Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.M. HICKERSON / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1880, stylishly-thrown, narrow-bodied pitcher with flared base, ovoid midsection, and tall collar. Decorated with brushed cobalt swags flanking a flower around the midsection. Collar decorated with inverted cobalt swags and dashed brushwork along the spout. Desirable form and small size. A 1 1/4" x 1/2" base chip. Two additional small base chips. A 4 1/2" hairline extending up from base. A very faint 3" Y-shaped hairline at base, which continues onto underside. A 3/8" hairline to rim, which does not extend through to interior, and likely occurred in the firing. H 10 1/4".
