Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Insect Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO. / LYONS," NY State origin, circa 1850, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, featuring a brushed design of an insect with spread wings and swag-and-spot-decorated body. Brushed "3" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. An excellent folk art design and only the second example of this design that we have seen bearing this important New York State maker's mark. Excellent condition with a tiny, partially-drilled indentation at base on reverse. Evidently, someone had started to drill the jug for a lamp wire, but decided against it.
