Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT, PA," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a very large brushed design of a leaf emanating from a stem with a smaller leaf, tulip blossom, and looping vines. Heavily-brushed detail throughout. The extravagant use of the cobalt on this example is consistent with Michael and Theophilus Miller's best brushwork. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A long crack from rim on front. A large in-the-firing contact mark to right side of jar's front, including a surface chip. Exfoliation to surface. Four rim chips. Two chips and some light wear to left handle. A small chip and light wear to right handle. Some staining to surface.
