Extremely Rare Shenandoah Valley Redware Pedestal, Stamped Four Times "BAECHER / WINCHESTER, VA," Anthony Bacher, Winchester, VA, circa 1880, tapered form with footed base, one side elaborately-decorated with an applied clay design of a bird feeding at a flowering plant. Reverse decorated with a second plant. Surface coated in cream-colored slip and decorated with marbled manganese and copper accents, all under a clear lead glaze. Two original piercings to base. Impressed twice at base and twice at shoulder with Anthony Bacher maker's marks. Exceptional form, exhibiting Bacher's classic glaze scheme and artistic use of applied decoration. Losses to applied decoration. Exfoliation to surface. Rim chips. H 8 1/2".
