Heatwole, Rockingham County, VA, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tall collar and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a split-stemmed foliate motif featuring fern-like brushwork. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Classic Rockingham County form by one of the region's most important potters. Rim chips. A 2 1/4" crack above one handle. A 3 1/2" line at base under one handle, extending 4 1/2" onto underside, where it forms a Y.
