Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with Rock Teeth, Signed "Lanier Meaders", Cleveland, GA, circa 1970, ovoid jug with well-sculpted face, including unevenly-placed kaolin eyes with black pupils looking to the side, nose with carved nostrils, pierced ears, and angled mouth with rock teeth. Unusual incised wrinkles or hair to forehead. Surface covered in a matte-green frogskin glaze with some areas of darker mottling. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. A fine, earlier work by Meaders, featuring a highly-expressive face. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, purchased by the consignor years ago. Excellent condition with a loss to one tooth, possibly in-the-firing. H 9".
