Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "W A MACQUOID & CO. / POTTERY WORKS / LITTLE WST 12TH ST, N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a trotting deer with large rack and raised front leg atop a stylized ground with pine trees in the distance. Light cobalt highlight to capacity mark. This jar is the finest deer-decorated piece by William Macquoid that we have ever offered, featuring a particularly large subject, executed in unusually bold cobalt. Provenance: Recently surfaced in New England. Very nice condition with a 1" rim chip on reverse, two smaller rim chips on side of jar, an additional tiny nick to rim, and a tiny nick to left handle.
