Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Federal Eagle Decoration, Stamped "W.A. MACQUOID & CO. / POTTERY WORKS / LITTLE WST 12TH ST N.Y.", circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large brushed design of an Eagle with heavy feather detail, clutching six arrows in its talons. Cobalt highlight to capacity mark. The eagle decoration on this crock is very rare for Macquoid and one of the finest we have seen by this maker. Typical Macquoid eagles, a scarce motif for the maker, depict the bird with a thinner body, spread wings, and a banner in its talons. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor forty years ago. Excellent condition with a 1 1/4" surface line from rim on side of crock, not visible on interior. A semi-circular, in-the-making surface line at base on reverse, not visible on interior.
