Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Federal Shield and American Flag Decorations, Inscribed " E.P.U.", Stamped "WM E WARNER / WEST TROY", New York State origin, circa 1850, squat-shaped jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a Federal shield flanked by vines, the inscription "E.P.U." for "E. PLURIBUS UNUM", and six American flags. Triangular group of slip-trailed spots below shield decoration. A highly unusual design for this maker. Literature: Illustrated on p. 147 of Broderick, Warren F. and William Bouck, Pottery Works: Potteries of New York State's Capital District and Upper Hudson Region. Madison, N.J.
