Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Federal Shield and American Flag Decorations, Inscribed " E.P.U.", Stamped "WM E WARNER / WEST TROY", New York State origin, circa 1850, squat-shaped jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a Federal shield flanked by vines, the inscription "E.P.U." for "E. PLURIBUS UNUM", and six American flags. Triangular group of slip-trailed spots below shield decoration. A highly unusual design for this maker. Literature: Illustrated on p. 147 of Broderick, Warren F. and William Bouck, Pottery Works: Potteries of New York State's Capital District and Upper Hudson Region. Madison, N.J. Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1995. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Chips to one handle. Some fry to cobalt. One base chip. H 8 1/4".
