Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Clasped Hand Decoration, Inscribed "Union / for / Ever," attributed to William Macquoid, Manhattan, NY, circa 1863-1869, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a finely-brushed design of two arms with ruffled sleeves and clasped hands, surrounding the inscription "Union / for / Ever." This wonderful sentiment about national unity indicates the jug was likely made during the Civil War, during the first few years of Macquoid's operation. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A 1" flake to top of spout. Otherwise excellent condition with minor surface wear and minor staining. H 14".
