Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JULIUS NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1840, skillfully-potted, highly-ovoid jug, decorated with a brushed design of a stem bearing three large flowers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, found on an early farm in the greater Bennington area, in a mill where large wooden containers were made. The jug was found with other, later pottery pieces in an area of the mill where the wooden containers would be painted. It still holds its original contents, presumably turpentine, judging by the smell. Excellent condition with some light staining around base, two shallow flakes to top of spout, and a few minor in-the-firing flaws to surface.
