Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & CO. / GEDDES, NY", circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a flowering plant emanating from a stump, accented with numerous spots. Unusual scrolled foliate motifs to shoulder. Brushed "4" at base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A 1 3/4", in-the-firing base chip to reverse. which is glazed over. Two small, post-firing base chips. Two chips to interior of rim. A long horizontal crack to base, connecting to a thinner Y-shaped crack extending across underside. Some heavy water glass staining to interior and lighter water glass staining to exterior.
