Rare Three-Gallon Glazed Redware Jar with Molded Federal Eagle Motif, possibly Southern, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and distinctive applied strap handles with ribbed surfaces and three impressions at each terminal; decorated on each side with a molded and applied design of a spread-winged Federal eagle with shield across chest, an olive branch and arrows in its talons, and a banner above its head, all within a sawtoothed border. Incised wavy line decoration directly below rim and running along the top of each handle. Exterior surface covered in a blackish lead-and-manganese glaze. Interior covered in a clear lead glaze over a reddish-orange ground. An early and finely-potted work of patriotic-themed American redware. The handle construction is stylistically similar to pieces produced in Eastern Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia, and North Carolina. Broken into sections and reglued, including painted touch-up along cracks. Heavy chipping to one handle. Heavy chipping to rim. Some light exterior surface wear. Wear to bottom edge. Interior with wear to interior base, extending partway up sides. H 15 1/4".
