Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Ohio River Valley origin, probably KY, circa 1840, slender-bodied jug with footed base, tooled shoulder, and small, semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a crested bird with long legs, perched in the crook of a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals, including X-shaped brushwork to base of handle. Wonderful folky style to decoration. The clay color, spout construction, and rectangular-bordered capacity mark indicate this jug was likely made in Kentucky. Relatively few figural-decorated pieces from the Ohio River Valley are known, making this jug a noteworthy recent discovery. A 1 1/16" chip to left side of spout. Base chips.
