Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK / N. YORK", Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with footed base, finely-tooled spout, and ribbed handle, decorated with three impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motifs resembling clam shells or fruit. Impressed below with the large, five-line maker's mark, "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK / N. YORK", highlighted in cobalt slip. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the largest Thomas Commeraw jugs that we have ever offered, featuring his most elaborate impressed signature. Typical in-the-firing flaws including surface lines and pings. Heavy chipping to base. In-the-firing flakes to underside. H 16 3/4".
