Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Decoration of a Dog Chasing a Fox, Stamped "HUBBELL & CHESEBRO / GEDDES, N.Y.", circa 1870, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed scene of a fox in begging or feeding stance, seated on a tree stump with running dog in pursuit. Slip-trailed twice with the number "5" at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. An extremely rare figural design with charming subject matter and desirable maker's mark. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Pennsylvania. Fry to cobalt. Light exfoliation to right side of crock. A 1 1/8" chip to right handle. H 12".
