Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Woodcock Decoration, Stamped "A.O,. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA, NY", circa 1870, large-sized crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a woodcock with long bill, large eye, and imaginatively-detailed body, standing on a leafy garland or stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity. An unusual depiction of a gamebird by a desirable New York State maker, executed in dark, crisp cobalt. A long, semi-circular surface crack on underside, which occurred in-the-firing and is not visible on the interior. A short hairline extends from this crack and runs 3 3/4" up base of crock on front. Otherwise excellent condition. H 11 3/4".
