Fine Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Bird Motif, Stenciled "R.T. WILLIAMS / NEW GENEVA / PA.", circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a crisply-stenciled design of a bird holding a branch in its beak, surrounded by the maker's stenciling, "R.T. WILLIAMS / NEW GENEVA / PA." Base with unusual freehand "3" with curving base, forming a stripe below the number. Additional freehand stripe decoration to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Incised "X" on underside. Among the better examples of R.T. Williams stoneware that we have offered, featuring unusually vibrant color for this maker. Excellent condition with a minor chip to each handle and some light water glass staining.
