Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO. / PA", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a central stenciled design of a radiating six-pointed star, surrounded by the maker's stenciling "HAMILTON & JONES. / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO. / PA", flanked by wreath-like rose stenciling. Freehand straight and wavy stripes to shoulder. Base with freehand "2" flanked by dashes, underscored by a freehand stripe. An attractive example of Western PA stoneware, featuring top-to-bottom cobalt decoration, crisp stenciling, and desirable "STAR POTTERY" logo. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with two short, faint in-the-firing lines to underside, one of which extends through to interior.
