Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a brushed design of a man's face, flanked by a crescent-shaped foliate motif. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark and handle terminals. This jug is potted in an exceptionally small size for this iconic Cowden motif. It is only the second one-gallon Cowden & Wilcox man-in-the-moon jug that we have ever offered, and the first since 2006. The rarity of this example is complemented by strong execution of the design and excellent color. An in-the-firing salt drip to shoulder. A faint Y-shaped line emanating from a tiny ping at shoulder, not affecting decoration. H 11 1/4".
