One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & CO.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a finely-brushed horizontal design of leaves and flowers emanating from a stem. Reverse decorated with a series of chain links around the shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Front of jar incised "12" above "21", the meaning of which is unknown. Impressed with "H. SMITH & CO." maker's mark above one handle. A small rim chip with a 4" line descending from it. A second very short line to rim. A chip to each handle. Base chips. Exfoliation to underside. A crack across underside.
