Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va.", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two boldly-brushed tulip motifs, applied over slip-washed clay. Stripe decoration under each handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed under one handle with a Solomon Bell maker's mark below a raised-face six-gallon capacity mark. A top-to-bottom crack on side of jar, which forms a tight Y on underside. Two minor rim chips.
