Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Sunflower Decoration, Stamped "J.W. COWDEN / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1861, large-sized, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flattened rim, decorated with a large sunflower plant motif, featuring three oversized blossoms with pointed petals, spiraled striping to the interior, and spotted centers. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Exceptional size, desirable early maker's mark, and imaginative brushwork.
