Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Owl Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & CO. / FORT EDWARD, NY", circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of an owl with large eyes and feathered ears, perched on a stylized branch. Light cobalt accents around the decoration suggest the potter may have wiped off an earlier design. Few New York State stoneware owl decorations are known. A 2 1/2" chip to side of rim. A few other small rim chips. Left handle with small chips. Small base chip. Some water glass staining to exterior.
