Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1865-1867, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a chicken with spotted body, pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An in-the-firing burn to base of decoration. Some light fry to cobalt. A 9 1/4" crack from rim on reverse.
