Extremely Rare Small-Sized Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed Eagle Maker's Mark, Stamped "A.H. EGOLF", Abraham H. Egolf, Bedford County, PA origin, third quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated around the both with S-shaped and curved vertical stripes of cobalt slip. Shoulder impressed with the ornate maker's mark, "A. EGOLF", surrounded by vines, underscored by crossed arrows with star, and surmounted by a spread-winged Federal eagle. Scant references in the historical record bear out that Abraham H. Egolf operated a stoneware manufactory circa 1876 near Bedford, Pennsylvania--apparently just west of Schellsburg, specifically. This jar is the first example of his stoneware that we have seen. A significant recent discovery in Western Pennsylvania stoneware. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 5".
