Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cooler with Incised Gentleman's Profile and Fish Motifs, Ohio origin, circa 1830, ovoid keg with raised banding and central squared bunghole with canted corners. Decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a man with top hat, collar, and wavy hair, emanating from the bunghole, beside an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a fish with striped body detail and pointed fins. Body of cooler decorated with brushed circumferential cobalt banding. Incised with an inverted "2" below bunghole. Featuring a desirable form with wonderful figural designs, the aesthetic value of this cooler is enhanced by its unusually small size. Excellent condition with some wear to edge of bunghole and expected, very minor wear to bottom edge of cooler. H 11 1/2".
