Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a crested bird with raised leg, striped tail, and detailed wing, standing atop a wide tree stump, accented with stripes and flanked by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Outstanding color and size to decoration. The addition of brushwork flanking the stump is most unusual. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in 1983. Very nice condition. A 3/4" x 1/2" spout chip and minor spout nick. Light staining to reverse. H 15".
